Who are the big six energy companies?

The energy companies often referred to as 'The Big Six' are British Gas, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, SSE, Npower and E.ON UK. Way back in 2004, they held a combined market share across our gas and electricity markets of 100%. This eventually led to the energy market regulator Ofgem allowing measures for smaller companies to compete fairly and for price comparison websites like us to offer quotes from multiple energy providers. At the time of writing, the big six are down to around 70% market share across Great Britain.

Does this mean that big six energy prices are the cheapest?

Absolutely not. Now that the markets allow competition, many smaller providers are offering gas and electric prices that are cheaper along with great customer service and support.

How can I switch to one of these smaller companies?

It's very easy for you to switch. Click here for a super fast quote If the price you see is cheaper than your current provider then simply request a switch. Your old supplier will talk to the new one to arrange a changeover date with no disruption to your supply.
